HinaHina Bridge Replacement

LOCATION Hina Hina Bridge, Clutha    PRINCIPAL Waka Kotahi NZTA and Clutha District Council   PROJECT DATES September 2020 to July 2021.

Design and Build a new 5-span single lane road and cycleway bridge across the Clutha River, South of Owaka. The structure consisted of 30no. 22m Hollow core beams, supported by 4 in-situ pile caps, each with 2no. 900dia. x 20m deep bored piles. In-situ abutments with driven UC piles and precast wingwall units. The approaches required the extension & improvement to 120m of causeway & involved geotechnical stabilisation & the installation of rip rap, plus 250m of road reconstruction & safety improvements.

Environmental Management over Sensitive Waterway: A site specific Contractors Social and Environmental Plan was developed and implemented.  Appropriate environmental protection measures were in place to ensure all activities were safely carried out and achieve full compliance with the Resource Consent. Demolition was carried out without the need for temporary staging, coffer dams or overpumping. Bridge sections were removed using high capacity winches, removing the need for excessive concrete cutting/crushing within the waterway. In the absence of temporary staging, an alternative installation method for the 30ton Hollow Core beams was required. The result was a custom-built launching system developed specifically for this project.

This Bridge project was a finalist in the 2022 NZ Bridges Awards: Small-Medium Structure Award: < $5 million.

Time Management: The original completion date was July 2021. Practical Completion was issued 25 June 2021 with entire project completion in July 2021 coinciding with additional agreed causeway & approach improvements.
