LOCATION Mangawhai Bay, Tauranga   PRINCIPAL Ontrack   PROJECT DATES April 2009 to September 2009

Replacement of a live rail bridge: 40m long two span steel beam bridge on the east coast main trunk line over a sensitive waterway. Works included the construction of 6 x 1200Ø x 33m deep permanent cased bored piles with bottom driven plugs and insitu concrete abutments. The piles were wet poured by tremie method.

Programme:  The project had very challenging conditions for work access as the adjacent old bridge had to be kept open for regular rail traffic whilst piling was carried out. The abutments, beams and deck were replaced during a 24hour rail closure. Despite these conditions CSL completed the project within the projected contract period and met the client’s programme expectations.

Quality: The project Quality Management Plan was implemented and observed in accordance with CSL’s AS/NZS ISO9001:2008 certification. No significant non-conformances were reported and minimal remedial works were required.

Health & Safety: The site specific Health and Safety Management Plan was implemented and observed in accordance with the company’s secondary level requirements for ACC WSMP. There were no serious harm accidents and minimal lost time.

Environmental: The project was completed over a sensitive watercourse. CSL was committed to providing comprehensive environmental management throughout the project, with protection of the watercourse of paramount concern. Appropriate environmental protection measures, such as silt traps and spill containment procedures ensured that all work activities were carried out within the environmental constraints.

Traffic Management: Road traffic management included temporary speed restrictions, detours and restricted site access. Permanent rail protection supervision was provided due to working adjacent to and inside the rail corridor.
